"Masterpiece Cinema - Gods & Monsters"
Good morning/afternoon/evening, everybody. Returning from a long hiatus, Masterpiece Cinema turns its ever-loving gaze at a modern classic…

"Conjure"
Hey everybody! Wanna watch some schmuck from Michigan talk about comics and waste your time? Then get a copy of "Conjure!"

"Dead and Breakfast"
You just might die laughing with this one.

"Cup of My Blood"
This week, my cup runneth over.

"Welcome to Super Hero High School"
As if being a high school freshman wasn’t bad enough already, imagine being a freshman at Sky High. At this particular school, which flies above the city to keep its location secret from super villains, new students are categorized as either “Hero” or “Sidekick,” although things are more politically correct now and it’s actually called “Hero Support.” Along with all the classic drama of high school, Sky High students also face the unique challenges that come with having super powers.

"Dead End--Scary and Minimalist"
It's a car in the woods. But man is it scary!

"Decoys--Just Plain Fun Watching"
Hot alien chicks, flamethrowers, and stupid white rappers. What more could you want from a movie? Besides artistic fulfillment....

"Jolly Roger: Massacre at Cutter's Cove--Not Worth Losing Your Head Over"
Yaaaar...it be fairly lousy. Avoid ye this seen-it-before unless ye be truly desperate, yarr.

"Dead Above Ground...and starting to stink."
Stephen J. Cannell must never write horror movies again. This is why.

"HORROR:Dark Heaven"
He may be the last man on earth. Nightmares tear at the edges of his sanity. Writer/director Douglas Schulze's DARK HEAVEN is an apocalyptic journey through desolate landscapes of lost faith and overwhelming grief.

"Dark Harvest"
Spraying blood on a cornfield is no way to go through life, son....

"Action/Adventure: Sahara"
Sahara is a fast-paced reincarnation of Indiana Jones featuring a great cast and fun soundtrack.

"SUSPENSE: Elektra"
Jennifer Garner returns as Elektra, a lethal synthesis of grace and power with the mystical power known as Kimagure; a limited ability to see the future. Elektra’s latest job forces her to make a decision that can take her life in a whole new direction or destroy her. Following the events of Daredevil, Elektra has been brought back from death by her mentor Stick. But as she fulfills her training, she is booted out. With no where to go she turns to the dark side as a hired assassin.

"Masterpiece Cinema - Coldblooded"
Hi, everybody. A short and sweet one this week as we take a look at…

"Alien Abduction--Disturbing. Confusing. Coming...Soon!"
It's coming soon, folks, but you may wish it wouldn't....

"SUSPENSE/HORROR: Exorcist: The Beginning"
To say that I liked this movie, well uh, No! In my opinion this movie could have been better; lots better to say the least. The overall plot is very much capable of making a gory movie, but the actors, the choppy script and the “just stand there and watch someone die attitude” ruined Exorcist: The Beginning way before it even started. There is no way that this movie could have ever beaten the first Exorcist. They shouldn’t have even tried. But we’ll give you a taste of what this movie is made of and you can make your on opinion.

"Corn--Somewhere, Orville Redenbacher Is Screaming"
It's poppin' good, makes sheep insane, and is good watching on top of it. You'll never look at the cob the same way again.

"COMEDY/CARTOON: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"
King Neptune’s crown has been stolen. A letter that was left on the empty pillow where Neptune’s crown once laid indicates that Mr. Krabs is the culprit. Although SpongeBob has just been passed over for the promotion of his dreams, he stands by his boss. His plans to reclaim the crown and to save Mr. Krab’s butt from being burned takes him and Patrick on a perilous mission to Shell City (dry land).

"Masterpiece Cinema - Manhunter"
Hey, everybody. This week, we’re doing something different. I’m going to discuss a movie that I DON’T recommend. How’s that for a bit of turn around?

"Masterpiece Cinema - Hackers"
Hey, everyone. This week we take a look at a film that was technologically out-dated even when it was released back in 1995.

"Close Your Eyes--A Sterling Example of British Mystery"
British mysteries and English ale--the best in their class

"ACTION/DRAMA: Sin City"
Walk the streets of Sin City, and you'll find violence, drugs, death, and even a bit of chivalry. In the film, you'll meet characters that range from a good-hearted but unfortunate cop to a hulking street fighter with a "condition" that sometimes skews his view of reality. The Miller/Rodriguez collaboration features some of their stories.

"Lethal Eviction--Slumlords Gettin' Theirs!"
Not in stores until May, I'm building your interest for it now - early. You're welcome.

"COMEDY/CARTOON: The Incredibles"
This film’s director Brad Bird, who also directed The Iron Giant, has again out done himself in this animated movie. As soon as the movie starts it becomes noticeably that it is maturer in approach and tone than most previous digitally animated movies. But children will love its cartoon-ism that brings out the laughter. Although this movie runs almost two hours, children could have trouble sitting through the whole movie, but is very doubtful. Craig T. Nelson (Mr. Incredible/Bob Pharr) does a wonderful voice that gives Mr. Incredible the human qualities that he needs to blend the movie completely. Holly Hunter (Helen Parr/Elastigirl) on the other hand is very recognizable but the character comes to life and you no long realize that it is Holly. The Incredibles has plenty of conflict that intensifies both the characters and their relationships with emotions that roar with confidence, anguish, envy and warmth. Leaving you with a close family that possesses some extraordinary abilities.

"SUSPENSE: Open Waters"
“Open Waters” is a mentally stimulating movie. It’s an excellent frightful movie that will leave a scary feeling deep down in the pit of your stomach. Because due to human errors this could possible happen again. “Open Waters” is partly based upon true events of a couple (Tom and Eileen Lonergan) in 1998. They disappeared off the Great Barrier Reef after a diving company accidentally left them behind in shark-infested waters. Their bodies were never found. Although several of their items, such as a wetsuit of Eileen’s size washed up in north Queensland and inflatable dive jackets marked with Tom and Eileen’s names were later washed ashore north of Port Douglas. None of the items showed any signs of damage from a shark attack, as the film suggest. Which causes me to say that the true events and the movie are not completely the same. So get a bowl of popcorn and sit down for an interesting chilling and daunting movie.

"The Last Horror Movie--Oh, If Only"
What does it say about our society when someone can create a film exhibiting the most awful kind of casual brutality and yet make that film so utterly, utterly boring that it's almost unwatchable?

"THRILLER: Saw"
Wow! Now here’s one for the psychopath’s out there. A totally screwed up individual that loves to see others in pain. He is trying, in his passionate way, to teach his victims the true value of life. Can you actually call someone a serial killer if he doesn’t KILL his victims? Humm I’ll make you wonder about that one! Despite it’s obvious flaws and Danny Glovers dreadful performance - Saw has to be one of the best B-rated films that I have seen in a long time. If you really think about it this movie could hit home, which is where the scary parts come in at.

"SUSPENSE/HORROR : The Grudge"
Sarah Michelle Gellar plays an American exchange student working as a home care nurse while living in Tokyo with her boyfriend. Sarah, in my opinion, is a wonderful actress who deserves better roles than this one. The Grudge is a suspenseful movie that goes around in circles. The only plot there is, is the curse, “Whenever someone dies in a powerful grip of rage, a curse is left behind.” It may be suspenseful but enough is enough! One problem with the movie is the difficult and shifting timelines that makes it hard for you to keep up with it. With all of the flashbacks you kind of get a grip on what the movie is trying to bring across, but the plot still lacks proportion. “The Grudge” is Takashi Shimizu’s remake of his original Japanese version of “Ju-On.” I haven’t had the pleasure to watch this version, but it’s bound to be better.

"SCI FI/ANIME- Ah! My Goddess!"
Take a breath, folks, as we dive headfirst into the world of anime!

"COMEDY/FAMILY/ACTION: The Pacifier"
When navy a S.E.A.L. fails in the film’s first mission, he is then assigned to the Plummer family. His job is to protect the five Plummer children from those who are after the recently deceased Howard Plummer’s invention which is still in the family home.

"Intermedio: Yes, Exactly"
It's the perfect title, folks. "Intermedio" means "In Between," and that's exactly what this is. High points, and low points. Perfectly in between good and bad.

"DOCUDRAMA: Downfall"
Downfall is an uber-realistic and bone-chilling account of the last days of German resistance to the Allies. Its central character is, of course, Adolf Hitler. He can't be called an antihero (the term is too light), but director Oliver Hirschbiegel also ensures that he's not portrayed as an antihuman either. Hitler's barbarity and brutality are obvious in the film, but at times Der Fuhrer is also compassionate to those he loves. The objectivity of the film is refreshing, yet its lack of one decisive viewpoint on Hitler's nature makes Downfall all the more unsettling (and fine) a film.

"ACTION:Cheerleader Ninjas"
It''s not the best movie you''ll ever see. It''s probably not even that good an idea. But all things considered, you could do vastly worse.

"HORROR/SCI-FI: Alien Versus Predator"
Director Paul Anderson must have been making a desperate attempt when he made the decision to mix two of the most frightening villains in the horror industry, especially since it’s already been done once with Jason versus Freddie. Is the movie industry out of ideas? I mean come on people get real! Alien by itself was great and Predator by himself was even better and both were scary, but putting them together makes it seem really cheesy and fake not scary as in a HORROR movie.

"Masterpiece Cinema - Arrested Development"
This week, a slight change in format as we make a heartfelt plea from TV land.

"COMEDY: Without a Paddle"
It's going to be a long journey for Matthew Lillard, Seth Green and pals in the comedy 'Without A Paddle'

"ACTION: Boa Vs Python"
When the only thing separating a movie from utter unoriginality is a second snake, it's time to find a different movie

"COLUMN: Masterpiece Cinema - Velvet Goldmine" (1)
Hello, everyone. You may or may not have read this column before. Basically, what I do is take a look at a different movie each week; a movie that I feel, for one reason or another, is underappreciated. If you're interested, you can check out the previous columns at The Cheers (www.thecheers.org). But for the time being, what's say we take a look at this week's film?

"Horror, Comedy: Cursed"
“Guess there's no such thing as safe sex with a werewolf.”

"Thriller: Dawn of the Dead'04"
Hell ran out of room-causing the dead to walk the earth. As we all know, Dawn of the Dead is a remake of the 1979’s Dawn of the Dead by George Romero. Dawn ’04 is the perfect remake of an intense horror movie bursting with zombies. Full of action and suspense this new Dawn is much more enhanced. It set’s itself out with it’s own bloody trail that leaves the entire city scrambling for survival. Dawn of the Dead 04’ is an indubitable crowd pleaser. These gruesome brain-crazed creatures move at an aggressively fast pace, they can run and jump, not to mention they love to chew and eat on your flesh. Dawn is a graphic, bloodshed horror movie that has an effective impact on audiences all over.

"Shaun of the Dead--Ale and Zombies"
A romantic action comedy. With zombies. Seriously.

"ROMANCE/COMEDY: Something’s Gotta Give"
Jack Nicholson and his up-lifted eyebrows are one of my ole time favorite actors. He plays the leading character in this romantic comedy just like he would in any other movie, strong, attractive and fascinating. His acting abilities mixed with Diane Keaton’s creative attitude makes up one hilarious adventure. Performances like this don’t come around very often. So sit back and enjoy this tranquil story as it escalates into a wonderful romance. Diane gives her all and there is no wonder why she was nominated for an Oscar in this romance “Something’s Gotta Give”.

"HORROR: Constantine"
Better then Catwoman, but not as sexy, Constantine tetters on the tight-rope of trying to satisfy the original fans and the MTV generation with a shorter attention span.

"ACTION: King Arthur"
Let the battle commence as King Arthur leads his soliders into war.

"HORROR: Blessed (2004)"
Sam and Her husband wont a baby. They find out they can't have one because she is infertile. Yet the doctor recommends a lab that might be able to help them. Heather Graham under goes the labs help. She later finds out everything worked and shes pregnant. Months go by and she find out, the baby's are going to be twins. Meanwhile all this going on. They're a man in a hooded sweatshirt killing previous woman who attended at the lab. Also little by little clues that the lab is involved in some divine spiritual blasphemy.

"HORROR: Anacondas : Hunt for the blood Orchid"
A team of scientist team up in search of a flower named the blood orchid. The flower has a chemical in it thats can make living things live longer. The Team is faced with three problems 1) they have to go through a jungle where "everything gets eaten" 2) the flower will die in 2 weeks and 3) giant Anacondas.

"COMEDY: Hitch"
Hitch never quite transcends its rom-com predictability, but it manages to breathe fresh, hilarious life into a tired story. Insisting that chivalry isn't quite dead and that even the most jaded can find love, its buoyant sincerity is winning in this cynical age. Will Smith, as the title character, finds romantic chemistry with Eva Mendes as a closed-off PR princess. Comic sparks also fly in scenes with Kevin James, the male Trilby to Smith's sexy Svengali.

"BIOPIC/DRAMA: Ray"
"Ray," is a fairly standard but lovingly-directed musical biopic of Ray Charles, replete with drugs, sex and mental torment. While never quite able to rise above its cliches, it's still a moving and compelling story, anchored by Jamie Foxx's towering performance as the title character, a man as flawed as he was gifted.

"THRILLER: The Forgotten"
Julianne Moore puts her foot down and demands respect in this suspenseful thriller. No one could have pulled this tear-jerker, heart breaking movie off, except for Julianne with her intelligent, precise and devoted characteristic's. This movie can hit close to home especially for all those mothers out there who agonize over their children. So make sure you bring some Kleenex's with you, cause The Forgotten knows how to make you knee deep in tears and on the edge of your seat, all at the same time.

"HORROR: The Village"
M. Night Shyamalan's The Village wrenched the horror industry with this twisted tale of a so-called thriller movie. What fascinates me is that there are people who actually enjoyed this lackluster movie. Although Shyamalan has a unique talent for mysteries this movie didn t do him justice. He choose a wonderful cast to play in this movie, like the lovely blind Ivy (Bryce Dallas Howard), Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix), and Lucius s mother Alice Hunt played by (Sigourney Weaver), but the plot of this movie screeches for more action, more conspiracy and at least an ending worth watching.

"Musical/Drama: The Phantom of the Opera"
While Joel Schumacher's opulently produced film version of the most successful stage musical of all time delivers deliciously as a visual feast, it's not so nourishing as good drama, marred by weak storytelling, a repetitive musical score, and poor characterizations. Still, if you simply allow the film's rich visuals to wash over you, it's fun for a brainless night at the movies.

"Drama: Million Dollar Baby"
Clint Eastwood's latest film, starring Hilary Swank as a young woman desperate to become a great boxer and Eastwood as her reluctant trainer who eventually grows to love her as a kind of surrogate daughter, earns high marks for its sensitive storytelling and its keen insights into human relationships, despite treading some awfully familiar territory.

"POLITICAL THRILLER/DRAMA: Hotel Rwanda"
While the direction is ocassionally ham-fisted, Hotel Rwanda is a riveting and powerful film--a descent into the true Heart of Darkness of racial hatred. The Hutu/Tutsi genocide of 1994 tore apart the small African country of Rwanda, and ended almost a million lives. The film takes an in-depth look of how the war impacted a few hundred Tutsis while zeroing in on the plight of its brave Hutu protagonist, played by the phenomenal Don Cheadle.

"COMEDY/DRAMA: Sideways"
An invigoratingly fresh dramedy about love under the influence, Sideways switches between laughter and tears to dazzling, dizzying effect. Two friends, masterfully played by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, take off on a wine-fueled road trip through the California vineyards and meet two women along the way. The direction is as clear and fine as a glass of Chardonnay, and the ensemble of four lead actors is one of the best in years.
