After a long hard day’s work at the hospital, Anna (Sarah Polley) goes home to cuddle with her husband. As the sun comes up the next morning she finds that her life will never be the same. She is in a worldwide pandemonium of flesh eating zombies that are over taking the world. Anna’s husband (Louis) wakens to find a neighbour girl standing by their bedroom door with blood on her. As he goes to check on her, the girl attacks him. Anna watches her husband die as she tries hard to keep the zombie-crazed girl out of their bedroom. Minutes later Louis is on his feet again and going after Anna. She escapes to her car only to realize that the entire neighbourhood is in complete chaos. She runs for her life when she is rescued by a black police officer named Kenneth (Ving Rhames).

They meet up with three other people who have survived the night. With the zombies pursuing the few remaining living people, they search for shelter. Their only refuge is a closed shopping mall. Kenneth pursues the chance to keep things in order and tries to keep the bloodthirsty creatures out by watching them from the roof. That’s when he realizes that there is a man on a nearby building waving. Using binoculars and poster board they speak and play games with the man to keep each other company. Things are okay at first, but when food starts to deplete and the power going out they realize that they need to make a plan. They intend to armor two mall shuttle busses and get out before the huge mass of the dead find their way in.
