Mr. and Mrs. Stronghold are real estate agents and their son, Will, is beginning high school. The live somewhere in Suburbia and are your typical American family. Well,
except for the fact that being real estate agents is just a cover, the
Strongholds are actually the most famous super heroes in the world. Not to mention, Will’s high school is a bit unusual. At
sky high, faculty and staff are devoted to teaching students everything
they need to know to be successful in life, like how to build a heat
ray or the proper weapons to use against ravaging zombies.
On Will’s first day as a freshman, he still has not realized his super power. He has neither his dad’s super strength, nor his mother’s ability to fly. In fact, he has no super power at all. As a result, he is put into the “Hero Support” class, i.e. the geeks. To make matters worse, he soon has a run in with Warren Peace whose mother is a super hero and father a super villain. Warren also has a beef with Will because it was the Commander (Will’s dad) who sent Warren’s father to prison, quadruple life sentence.
Meanwhile, one of the
Strongholds’ old enemies is plotting a way to infiltrate Sky High and
get rid of the super heroes once and for all. In the end, the only hope of stopping the villain’s scheme falls to Will and his rag-tag gang of sidekick friends.
Anyone at all
familiar with the classic comic book heroes should find the gags and
puns scattered through the movie entertaining, such as a scene where
the students must practice writing appropriate sidekick lines. On the board you see “Holy ___, ___ man!” The
over-the-top comic clichés are paired with humorous quips about teen
life, like, “Yeah, well if life were to suddenly get fair, I doubt it
would happen in high school.” These aspects of the film have adult appeal, while the drama and comedic gags are geared toward the younger crowd. Ultimately, a good choice for a family film.
Who is Ali Eickholt? Ali is an English Major nerd who enjoys literature, music, and (of course) movies.
